John Herschel was the developer of the "cyanotype" process in 1842 used even today in alternative photographic printing. Today Cidne Hart (wife of Kevin Hass) a proponent of the printing process shared her techniques and work with f8. Below is a narrative from Cidne and a link to the process “Cidne Hart presented a program on the cyanotype process--one of the early photographic processes developed in 1842 by John Herschel. The process today is largely the same, but we are now able to print film negatives on desktop printers using digital files instead of the original glass plates or camera negatives. She showed prints she had made and examples of film negatives printed on inkjet and laser printers. She shared paper she had coated with anyone who wanted to try it at home. Here is a very helpful and extensive website on all the alternative processes:” http://www.alternativephotography.com Below are examples of Cidne's work Finally, we chatted about some New York Times articles and photo essays The first was from Teju Cole and his essay on why so many travel snapshots look the same..it appears that it may not be our collective fault Teju Cole: Take Picture Here The second was a great photo essay with "uncanny" views of NYC by John Chiara and comment by Luc Sante....writer and critic John Chiara: Uncanny City Finally we noted an article on "Measuring Aesthetics" and its potential importance for artists...we'll discuss this in some future f8 meeting.
