“…in my forties I decided to become a photographer because it offered a means of creative thought and action. I didn't rationalize this, I just felt it intuitively and followed my intuition, which I have never regretted” Wynne Bullock Nothing better said characterizes the photography and aesthetic of our guest today... Nily Havel, a researcher at USC who picked up a camera late in life to fill in some important areas of her life...and we're glad she did...and came to f8 Pasadena Salon to show and talk about her work. Nily has explored a wide variety of subjects from the natural environment to the built environment of the city and still life. Below are just some examples of the work she showed with her visit today. We hope she returns to f8 Pasadena in the future with new work sometime soon. "Photography Remix" from NYT Magazine 4-19-15 / by Teju Cole The article describes a practice being adopted by photographers and creatives where images are harvested from the internet and remixed and recycled to form "new pictures and works of art." These new works can take the form of a single new picture, a series of similar subject photographs, a new book and even new gallery shows with these works. The ethical and aesthetic value of these "new" works has yet to be decided in the art world, among collectors, gallerists and museums. We will revisit the "remix" issue at future meetings. Lastly, Bill showed a short series of new abstract photography derived from a photo shoot done a year ago along the railroad tracks in Atwater. The series never panned out from a "wall" standpoint but now has been recycled into a pure abstract series. The group had mixed comments on the the pictures. Obviously, the concept needs more thought and work before it is ready for prime time. Below is one example shown today... Noted today was the recent acquisition of photography by Ansel Adams and William Current
by the Huntington Photography Archives. We will discuss this further as details emerge from the Museum.

"A photograph is a biography of a moment" Art Shay What could exemplify the quote from Shay best is Gareth Seigel's visual review of The New York Times Magazine article last week (4-12-15) "The Last Coal Miners of Spain" Below is a single example of the portraits shown in the photo spread Comments included how the photographs looked similar to the portrait works of the great master painters. You can find the portfolio on the NYT website...worth the look! Howard reviewed his visit to the Getty for their new exhibit: "Light, Paper, Process: Reinventing Photography" The exhibit focused on works not produced with traditional techniques f8 Pasadena will do a field trip in the next month to visit Getty Bill discussed an upcoming event sponsored by PasadenaPhotographyArts (PPA) Open Show Open Show is an international organization in 15 countries and 31 cities. slanting beach culminating in a pseudo "vanishing point: the use of B&W; the "sameness" of the the sky, ocean and even the people Last but not least is a bit of "housekeeping" at Jones As you have seen, Jones has moved things around for better efficiency of their store. The chest where our cables were stored was moved and as a result we move our gear to a new spot in a chest under the bulletin board...it's in the second drawer see picture below It only seemed right to throw a party for f8 on our 8th anniversary...and so we did. Held at Jones Coffee (where else!), we gathered with our spouses and kids for an evening of good food, good pictures and a communal sense of wonder that its been 8 years we are together. The first order of he evening was to thank our hosts...the Jones Family...Chuck (the owner) and his willing helpers Larry and Mireya...Larry even made the Sangria for the party. Chuck has facilitated our weekly meeting from their inception 8 years ago in the "old Jones Coffee" store. He has also given us space to show our work and hang our electronic screen to show our work each week. The food was excellent...Sangria and a Mexican feast complete with flan for dessert. The Barista kept us all in coffee of one sort or another until the party closed. We had photographic contributions from most of our f8'ers...too many to show here on the blog. And then we had displayed the results of our Photoshop Tennis challenge organized by Mark and gratefully printed by Paul for the party show. All the pictures are posted below with the edits captioned. There were 4 teams each with a different "original" picture...the subsequent pictures were sequentially edited. And so went Photoshop Tennis ...bravo to all who created the images and did the edits. Chris could not be with us today and instead he sent one of his great pictures for an impromptu raffle. The lucky person turned out to be Howard. We next went around the room for "last comments"...another tradition at each Saturday meeting. Each f8'er was asked to make a few comments and introduce their spouse or kids. Lots of great positive comments about f8 Pasadena Salon and those who contribute to its success. Last, no group of respectable photographers can resist a "self portrait" and thats just how we ended a great evening ....see below. Jim Staub, Howard Landau, Scott Herman, Mark Myers, Steve Lewis, Kevin Hass, Carel Struycken, Charley Kohlhase, Debra Lemattre, Carrie Hirsch, Kathy Wishner, Bill Wishner, Paul DuPont (f8'ers missing from picture...Angelo DiBilio, Charles Edwards, Chris Kleine, Richard Schuster, Gareth Seigel, Rene Sheret) Thanks to all f8'ers past and present for their participation and love of the art and aesthetics of photography...and putting up with me as your fearless leader...muchas gracias!
