“Life isn't black and white. It's a million gray areas, don't you find?” Ridley Scott f8 Technical Week Joe Loudermilk discusses B&W Conversion Today, f8 Pasadena Salon had a rare technical meeting with Joe demonstrating his techniques for conversion of color to B&W using Lightroom and Photoshop and elements from NIK. Below is Joe's narrative of the meeting.
"The presentation started with a brief explanation of Ansel Adams Zone System and how those zones relate to today’s histograms in digital imaging software packages. For the presentation, Joe took a color digital RAW image thru Adobe Lightroom then into the Nik software group, mainly Silver Efex Pro and finally on to Adobe Photoshop for final levels adjustments. In each program, he explained the best usage of specific tools of that program to build final Black and White Image, noting when to stop in one program and begin work in the program." Below is an example of Joe's conversion from color to B&W

Raindrops on roses And whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens Brown paper packages tied up with strings These are a few of my favorite things Oscar Hammerstein / Richard Rodgers Narrative below: Howard Landau "Howard pitched in as leader today with the assignment for people to bring in their favorite picture and talk about it, telling the back story and what about it makes it their favorite. I had some email conversation before the meeting about the difference between the “best” picture and “favorite.” My feeling is that your favorite is probably not your best. Your favorite is probably not an award winner or one that you’ve sold. It’s your favorite because of the circumstances leading to it or how it makes you feel when you look at it. It was surprising to see what people brought in. Some selections were not the person’s typical shots or ones that we’ve seen before. The best part was hearing what made the shot the favorite. We had excellent discussion following each presentation which sharpened our eye and gave us insight to the creative thinking and approach to photography. This lively dialogue is what makes f8 so special week in and week out." Below are just three of the contributions...all attributed “There will be times when you will be in the field without a camera. And, you will see the most glorious sunset or the most beautiful scene that you have ever witnessed. Don’t be bitter because you can’t record it. Sit down, drink it in, and enjoy it for what it is!” DeGriff Today we had a combination of sunsets and cityscapes...sunsets by Scott and cityscapes by Joe Scott showed several pictures from his series"The Infinite Sunsets of Bellingham Washington" that we see from time to time at f8. The picture below depicts the hard work in capturing these scenes. Joe brought back some iPhone B&W's from his recent sojourn to Japan....cityscapes. Joe will discuss his B&W processing techniques when he leads f8 in two weeks. Steve Lewis...our f8 man in Detroit just had a solo show. I don't know the title or theme but I think it related to his work in Detroit and follows on his presentation to our group a few weeks ago. Congrats to Steve Finally, Paul did a show & tell on printing on Jacquard silk and showed several example. below is the link to the website. http://www.inkjetfabrics.com
