“Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.” Don McCullin Today we were joined by a guest, Karchi Pearlman, a photographer with more than 30 years of photography experience here in the US and abroad. Karchi shared with us a polyglot of snapshots and pictures from his earliest days of photography to his latest several series. His photography aesthetic was clearly influenced by his pre-photography education in philosophy and later his need to share his spiritual feelings in his picture capture and presentation narrative. His most recent series or projects included Joshua Tree, Santa Monica Beach, City & Highway Scapes and lastly his Monument Series. Discussion ranged from specific techniques to aesthetics of composition and production. We chatted a bit about the inspiration and nidus of each project There obviously too many pictures to show on our blog post. Below are three examples from his more recent work.

Open Session Today
Where discussion went from an object of desire (new Leica Q) to an almost unrestrained cacophony of iPhone pictures shown via Apple TV With all the iPhone pictures we saw, I wonder if we should make that part of our meetings every so often...just go around the room and have folks "sequentially" show their pictures from their iPhones...I think this might be a good idea. What does everybody think? Kathy discussed Sally Mann's new memoir she just finished reading. Her comments were the book was well written (Mann was a major in literature) but the photo reproductions in the book were quite poor. It was noted that Adobe has released its latest upgrade for Creative Cloud 2015 that includes a new feature..."de-hazer" found in both PS and LR. Mark pointed us to a new website to show our pictures... https://pixelmagic.exposure.co Rene pointed us to website of photographer Thomas Winz... http://www.thomaswinz.com Jim pointed us to a CalTech website site "The Art of Science" http://www.artofscience.caltech.edu Finally, Bill showed some new walls fro his "Art of the City" wall series and his recent trip to SF and revisiting some wall art sites around the city. Bill also printed and showed the photo below: "The still (picture) must tease with the promise of a story the viewer of it itches to be told." Cindy Sherman Today we had a presentation from one of our own, Carrie Hirsch. We last saw her work several years ago as she began her odyssey into the world of photography. Since that time she has further explored her primary focus...conceptual photography using paintings of the masters as the starting point for staging her subjects and background in her visual interpretation. Several examples are below... Also she has sought out women subjects and women with small businesses as subjects for her professional photography business. There was discussions centering on her influences photographically...and whether her visual interpretations were influenced by the self portraits of Cindy Sherman. We all encouraged Carrie to participate more often Next we had a nice discussion of Howard Landau's recent art excursion to Cuba. Howard had a small set of "snapshots" he made with the promise of some more visual treasures in the near future Kevin Hass has an exhibit opening at Ave 50 Gallery...see below New pictures in our Jones Gallery...thanks to
Rene Sheret Richard Schuster Bill Wishner And finally...we had a guest today Kathy Curtis Cahill http://www.kathycurtiscahillfineartphotography.com You can check out her website...Kathy will join us again in the near future to discuss her work and her background in the movie industry. |
