“To consult the rules of composition before making a picture is a little like consulting the law of gravitation before going for a walk.” Edward Weston Today, we finished our f8 Pasadena Salon year by going on a short field trip to the Huntington Library to look at the pictures of Edward Weston as part of the "Real American Places" exhibit.
Weston embarked upon a 20,000 mile trip around the country (with Claris) to provide pictures for a special edition of Whitman's "Leaves of Grass." Ultimately the edition was not much to his liking mostly because of editorial changes to names of the pictures. The pictures used in this volume and many more were donated to the Huntington in 1944. Besides the pictures, the exhibit had a few artifacts of Whitman's writing and the book itself. A small exhibit but fun to see and discuss. Today we had a “guest” from the City of Detroit….our own f8 member Steve Lewis. Steve gave a presentation entitled “Detroit Matters” outlining both the current state of the city and the role he is playing in helping to revitalize the urban enivironment. Much of what Steve is doing involves connecting with the community at the same time solidifying plans for urban renewal. From Steve’s point of view, the community input is the critical key for a successful outcome. His goal and others in the planning process is to make the “new” Detroit a place for all and sustainable into the future. Noe of what he and his urban planning colleagues are doing is small. Detroit urban renewal is bigger than Manhattan, Boston and San Francisco combined! All this will require infusion of business money, infrastructure renewal saving what is left of the “old” Detroit while modernizing everything around it. Steve is one of several leaders directing the planning in three separate areas of the city. Needless to say, we are all proud of Steve and his work in Detroit and hope he will come back to f8 Pasadena periodically and share his life in Detroit and hopefully his pictures of the emerging city with us. What else we did today...
We chatted briefly about our trip in April to Santa Fe…details after 1/1 Rene mentioned our f8 Pasadena Salon Gallery at Jones and he will fill in details after 1/1…it appears we will be able to show our work in the side room at Jones. Today was our first time in Debrah’s studio, Good Citizen Media, in South Pasadena. Her studio will be our new home for 2017 and hopefully beyond. Thank you Debrah and Bill (her partner) for your generous offer to share your studio on Saturday mornings. Remember, parking is for 2 hours on Mission and longer on the side streets. Our 2017 schedule is posted under the tab "About" TODAY WAS OUR LAST DAY AT JONES COFFEE!!! After 10 years at Jones Coffee f8 Pasadena Salon will leave our adopted home and move to a new location As Jones Coffee keeps growing, they needed our meeting space for expansion of the business. Chuck Jones and his family Larry and Mireya had given our f8 group the space to meet and thrive this past decade and for that we will be forever grateful. Below is a picture of our group on our last Jones day Starting next Saturday we will be meeting at Debrah's studio in South Pasadena; Good Citizen Media Group / 1026 Mission / South Pasadena CA 91030...same time each week.
We also discussed our schedule for 2017 and its published today on the blog...please take a moment to review esp the dates you are leading the group. After all our logistical discussions today, we did manage a few minutes looking at a few new B&W pictures from Joe. One of which is below |
