“Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.” – Cecil Beaton Today we met at the Girdner Gallery where the current exhibit is by one of our own f8'ers, Rene Sheret. Rene shared his story in photography starting with his very early days with a camera as a child. His formal training came from Art Center followed by a career in creative photography design until his "retirement" a few years ago. But, the reality is he really never retired but instead turned his attention to more experimental photography and design in the digital world. His work is known throughout the Pasadena environs with his iconic pictures of Pasadena landmarks and architecture. In addition Rene frequently takes to the streets to capture the daily life both here in LA and in other cities around the world. The self portrait below was shot in Barcelona. Rene also discussed some technical production issues that allow production of his final images. A set of his pictures in various formats and styles is on display in his exhibit at the Gallery....which by the way ends on July 2nd Thanks again to Minh for hosting us. The next photography exhibit will be in August and hopefully we will meet with he/she during the exhibit. Next week we are dark for the July 4th holiday weekend.

by Kevin Hass Thanks to all who attended today and participated in a great discussion. We talked about the railroad photography of O. Winston Link and how he created the scenes he photographed in the 1950's using 4x5 cameras and dozens of large flash bulbs for each shot. In contrast, we also viewed and talked about the work of photographer Don Normark, seen in his important social documentary on the destruction of a Mexican-American village in Chavez Ravine, where he photographed in 1949. A public housing project planned for the land was not carried through. Many lives were changed forever in the destruction and ensuing controversy. O. "With the goal of getting feedback for a new lecture he recently put together for his Photography class, Charles give led us through a presentation called “Symbol & Meaning,” a look at how motion picture and television directors use these visual cues to lead and engage their audience. With stills from famous films and shows including “The Dear Hunter.” “Schindler’s List,” “House of Cards” and “True Detective,” to name a few, Charles demonstrated how strategically employed composition and color choices steer the viewer toward meanings and insights that may be unsaid in the script. He selected perfect examples to demonstrate his points and the group eagerly participated with questions and comments, adding dimension to the conversation. Charles is a thoughtful and articulate teacher. Any student would be fortunate to have him for their professor. Howard gave the group a report from his recent visit to the new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and their inaugural photography exhibition, “California & The West” with examples from many of the greats including, Adams, Cunningham, Weston, White, Ruscha and Sultan. A definite stop the next time you’re in City by the Bay." |
