“Photography is about finding out what can happen in the frame.” Garry Winogrand Today we were hosted by Minh Tsai at the Walt Girdner Gallery where we had a talk by Derek Goldberg. His exhibit is on display this month..."Views Through the Portal" Derek described his life path in the visual arts...in cinema then in the art of still photography. "I'd like to claim that I have an all-encompassing visual and aesthetic philosophy that underlies my approach. But, point in fact...I shoot what interests me. Moreover, I can't even say I really choose my subject matter. It chooses me. In this exhibition, I have concentrated on images interestingly framed or presented from a restricted or define perspective. But what I'm talking about here...is the framing through a doorway or window...in other words how a portal defines the view." Derek noted his influence from Garry Winogrand Derek shared his other visual interests via his website images in addition to his thoughts on color and B&W images. The discussion was, as always, lively and informative.
