“You don't take a photograph, you make it.” Ansel Adams Today's discussion included. among other things. Bill's recent visit with Eric Joseph at Freestyle Photo in Hollywood. All of know and most of us have attended Eric's seminar "The World of Inkjet Paper and Printing" but many do not know his willingness to sit down with you individually and work out issues related to paper choice and printing. I know of no one with his expertise willing to spend the time with individual photographers on this subject. If you have not attended his workshop, check on the Freestyle website for dates in the future and attend! He and Freestyle give this gift to our photographic community. As part of Bill's "one on one" meeting with Eric, they discussed issues e.g.
-strong need to profile monitors, papers and printers -effect of paper choice on fine print aesthetics -effect of quality of light in viewing a print -artistic aesthetic as driver of choices culminating in the final print -paper choice as it affects the longevity of prints -the need for "degassing" the final print...and spraying after Also Eric printed samples of Bill's prints on a wide variety of papers most would not normally have access to or even consider. Bill showed samples of the final prints on different papers to f8...even though our lighting was and has been challenging at Jones. Eric made sure I understood that ultimately the choices were mine as an artist. Along with all this discussion and more, the contribution of one of our f8 members to the photographic community was again noted. Any of us who plan to use the print as the final product of our photography efforts should avail themselves of Paul DuPont's expertise in color management and profiling of our hardware and paper. He is a master of all things color and consults for professional photographers, businesses and academic centers around the world. He also sits with us at f8 Pasadena. How lucky we are to have him in our group. Paul also works closely with Eric at Freestyle. We should all support Freestyle Photo when we need supplies or support for our photography.
